Psych Club Kick-Off Meeting THIS Friday!

Psych Club will host its kick-off meeting for the 2016-17 school year on Friday, Sept 2! Psych Club meets monthly on the 1st Friday of each month, and anyone with an interest in psychology is welcome to join.

One of our first tasks will be to vote on a club t-shirt design for the year so we can place the order as soon as possible (and get our shirts by the time of the October monthly meeting). You can preview the design options below. Votes will be cast electronically, so please have your Chromebook or device with you during the meeting if you wish to vote.

Because of the size of our group, I am hosting meetings during BOTH Lunch A and Lunch B. I'll set things up for a "drop in" style meeting where you arrive, complete the tasks you need to (e.g., signing in, getting info about upcoming events, voting on t-shirt designs, etc.), and then you can be on your way. I'm hoping that will ease congestion and allow everyone to participate!

There will also be door prize drawings held at 12:30 and 12:45, so plan to be present during at least one of those times if you want a chance to win fabulous psych stuff!

Psych Club...Assemble!

With school back in session, it's time to kick off the year in Psych Club. Our first meeting will be Friday, September 4th during Lunch B (in rm 136). Thereafter we'll continue to meet the first Friday of the month.

Of course, no respectable club should go without witty t-shirts, so our first order of business will be voting on t-shirt designs. Here are this year's options for you to preview!

Lip Dub News: Psych Club

Wednesday is the day that filming will take place for the Chi-Hi Lip Dub video. Psych Club has some great real
estate for this event, and even if you are representing other clubs/sports you may be able to throw on your t-shirt and join us.

Important Instructions:
  • What to wear: Psych Club T-shirt (this year's or last's) and sunglasses. Reflective, aviator sunglasses would be awesome, especially if you want to pull off that Jim Jones look. Don't have a t-shirt? See Mrs. Welle for extras (to borrow or buy).
  • We need volunteers to step forward to carry the sign for Psych Club, hold the brain, hold the phrenology head, wear visual displacement goggles, and whatnot. Everyone else will be doing something pretty simple (maybe throwing confetti?), so if you want to be a star, here's your chance! Note: Sadly, the Bobo doll we ordered had a hole in it...so that part of the act is out. :(
  • Stop by rm 136 to see where we are located on the map (especially if you will be joining us after appearing in a group filmed earlier). We are next to the Cray Commons area and will be filmed at approximately 7 mins & 30 seconds into the shoot. That means we'll likely be showing up near the start of the 3rd song: Dynamite (by Taio Cruz). I've embedded the song/lyrics below, so you can practice your best lip syncing.
  • We're going to need some help setting up (and getting organized) around 1:30 PM. Meet in Psych Club's designated area and we'll get things ready to go.
  • At 2:00 PM, everyone will be meeting in the gym for instructions, then there will be a practice walk through, followed by two filmed takes.

Need to know lyrics for the earlier songs? To help you out, here are (1) "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas and (2)  "September" by Earth, Wind, & Fire.

Brain Awareness Week Events

This year, Psychology Club is participating in Brain Awareness Week for the first time. The week is devoted to the celebration and promotion of neuroscience and is organized by the Society for Neuroscience, the Dana Foundation and Brainfacts.org. This year, Brain Awareness Week is March 11-17, so at today's Psych Club meeting, we finalized the details of some of our activities and events. They include:
  • Posting quick Brain Facts around the building on bright pink "brains."
  • Monday 3/11: Brain-themed music will be played during the lunch hour in the school cafeteria.
  • Tuesday 3/12: Demonstrations during the lunch hour: visual displacement goggles.
  • Wednesday 3/13: Brain-Related Team Trivia in Rm 136 during Lunch B!
  • Thursday 3/14: This is Pi Day...we're taking a break and eating pie with the math department. Brains like Pi and Pie, we figure.
  • Friday 3/15: Brain Cookies & Psych Club celebration in rm 136 during Lunch B.
Psych Club members create Brain Fact signs to be hung around the building during Brain Awareness Week.

Phrenology Head Arrives at Chi-Hi

Our new Phrenology Head
Last week Friday we welcomed a new member of the AP Psychology family to Chi-Hi, when our Phrenology Head arrived in the mail! My classroom has long felt the absence of a phrenology head, since it seems no psychology classroom would be complete without one. However, thanks to the folks at Jake's Antiques and Reproductions, we now have a model even Franz Gall would be proud of. (Note: Ours is certainly a reproduction, not an original...the Psych Club budget is not THAT flush.)

We are looking forward to making sure this friendly piece of psychology history is outfitted for each season, and my students wasted no time in arranging for some accessories.

Phrenology Fiona?
The next big step for Phrenology Head will be our December Psych Club meeting on December 7, during Lunch B, where we will vote on an official name for the Phrenology Head. Personally, I'm pulling for Phrank the Phrenology Head, but we'll see what club members come up with.

Also during the December Psych Club meeting, we will be decorating Psychology cookies for the holidays (because...why not?). So this will be a meeting you won't want to miss.

Look Who's Here!

Guess what arrived late this afternoon as my 7th hour students worked to finish their Neuroscience tests? JOHN WATSON! Chi-Hi students will be able to pick up their (paid for) t-shirts tomorrow.

JUST IN TIME FOR US TO WEAR THEM FOR PSYCH CLUB ON FRIDAY!!!!

Your friends will be SO jealous of this fashionable tribute to the father of behaviorism.
Folks who ordered from afar can expect to get their t-shirts next week sometime. We have to sort, pack, and ship...but first we've got some club business to attend to (a Brain Food contest), so we'll probably be mailing out orders on Monday, October 8.

Brain Food Extra Credit

Mrs. Welle's Brain Cake - 2010
After completing the Orange Brain Surgery lab earlier this week, you have undoubtedly figured out that the best models of the brain are edible ones. So, our next Psych Club meeting will feature a celebration of delicious neuroanatomy through a "Brain Food" contest.
Current AP Psych students who participate will earn 5 points extra credit (computed in test category), as this will help them review important structures in the brain/nervous system.

The Rules:
  • Entries must be edible representations of the brain or portions of the nervous system (e.g. neuron, synapse, brain stem, etc).
  • Component parts must be accurately labeled.
  • Entries will be judged during LUNCH A, so they must be delivered to room 136 no later than 12:15. You have to set up/complete registration for your entry during lunch (or have a friend do so), so please don't just leave your creation in my room in the morning an assume it will get set out.
  • Winners will be announced and snacking will commence during our regular meeting time (Lunch B)!
Even if you do not wish to enter (and earn Extra Credit), you are welcome to join us for the meeting & eating. There is always plenty of food to go around.

Be sure to wear your new Psych Club t-shirt, too, since those will be distributed early next week!

If you are looking for inspiration and ideas, check out the AP Psychology facebook page for pictures of some of last year's entries and winners.

First Psych Club Meeting Scheduled!

Psychology Club will be meeting FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2nd during Lunch B in room 136 (Mrs. Welle's room)! This is quicker than I had anticipated, but advisors for Lunch & Learn clubs met to put together the master schedule today and this is what we got...

Which is okay, because it means we can get out T-shirts ordered right away. :)

From here on out, Psychology Club meetings will be held the first Friday of the month (also during Lunch B in rm 136).

I'll post the T-shirt design options soon, so stay tuned.

Psychology Snow Fort Progress

We had a small, but dedicated work crew turn out for our snow fort building project. I must admit, I was very impressed with our progress. Not only did we complete several tunnels, but we planted a psychology flag and decorated the fort with pro-psychology propaganda. Some videos of our progress below...

After about 30 minutes of digging we had joined three tunnels. This next video is a little dark because our daylight was fading, and I was trying to film in a tunnel.

Butter Braid Sale Kick-off!

Wow. What an attractive-looking bunch! You really can't go wrong with a Piaget shirt. :)

Today's Psych Club meeting kicked-off our fundraiser for the May 17th Next to Normal trip.

If you missed the meeting, you also missed out on some samples of the delicious Butter Braids we are selling to earn some cha-ching for the trip. But here's the pertinent info if you still need it:

Sale ends December 3rd (our next Psych Club meeting) and completed order forms & money are due that day. The product, which is delivered FROZEN, will arrive after school in the cafeteria on December 17th. Make sure that you (or a confederate) are available to pick up your stuff and deliver it that day, since Mrs. Welle does not have that much freezer space and cannot store your stuff indefinitely.

You make $4.50 per item you sell, and anyone hoping to write out a check can make it payable to Chi-Hi when they place their order. If you sell enough, you'll be able to score a rockin' seat at the Next to Normal performance, so good luck!

T-Shirts Have Arrived!

Just in time for our Developmental Psych Unit!

Our 2010-11 Psych Club shirts arrived this afternoon, so you may pick them up at your leisure. These shirts will be excellent attire for tomorrow's viewing of the Piaget video we're watching in class.

Also, we have a Psych Club meeting coming up next week on Monday, November 1, during Lunch B. This would be another great time to sport your Piaget-wear, though the main purpose of the meeting is to distribute fundraising materials for the Butter Braid sale we will be doing to raise money for the Next to Normal trip on May 17th.

Final T-Shirt Order

I'm submitting the order for Psych Club T-shirts today.

Please double check the final list to make sure your indicated size is correct. I may be able to make changes to the order as late as Monday (10/18/10), but after that, we're locked in!

If for some reason you do not see your name on the list, but you believe you did pay for a T-shirt, please let me know immediately.

Have a great weekend!

Psych Club Shirt Money Due Friday

Greetings, all! If you are one of the many Psych Club members who ordered this year's club T-shirt - featuring the one and only Jean Piaget - this is just a friendly reminder that your $15 is due on Friday.

I hope to place the order before the weekend so we can get the shirts in a couple of weeks, so don't delay!

Also, as you are likely aware, our next Psych Club meeting is this Friday. We have a number of items on the agenda, including:
  • getting in place some fundraising plans for Next to Normal
  • possibly setting a date for our first Movie Night of the year (needs to happen soon...)
  • eating the Brain Food creations brought by our members

Brain Food: Extra Credit Opportunity

Friday, October 1 will be our next Psych Club Meeting, and given our current studies in Neuroscience, it will focus on fun with the brain.

We will be having a “Brain Food” competition. In order to participate (and earn some extra credit it AP Psych), you should bring some edible treat that features labeled parts of the brain or the nervous system.

The Rules:

1. Your entry must depict the brain or nervous system, or some component part of either (e.g. a neuron).

2. It must have labels for the component parts. This is educational food, after all.

3. Your name should be marked somewhere on or near your entry, so we know who gets credit.

4. Although items will not be judged on taste, it should be something edible; we will be eating all of the entries during Lunch B, so don’t get too attached to your brain. This also means hygiene/food safety is important. Wash your hands, all right?

5. You must have your entry here at the beginning of Lunch A so our guest judge can make his/her determination of winners, which will be announced during our meeting (Lunch B).

6. Although you can get reasonable assistance from family members, your creation must be your own. For example, you cannot have your mom or dad simply make your entire entry or do all of the decorating, but they can help you with the recipe. Likewise, you cannot order a pre-made treat from, say, a professional bakery.

7. This is a one-shot deal, so if you are sick or for some other reason unable to bring your treat on Friday, you’ll have to wait for the next extra credit opportunity. Sorry, but we don’t want your old cupcakes/dessert/jello/whatever three days later.

5 Points EC (in test category) for All Participants!
Though, Mrs. Welle reserves the right to adjust points (or not award them at all) if your entry seems to not reflect any effort/learning. Don’t bring us one crudely-constructed cupcake. That’s lame. Bring your A-game.

Need some ideas? Here are some links to inspire you, but be creative! With Halloween coming up, supplies are bound to be out there if you are motivated.
